Using Children's Literature to Teach Human Rights

Join us for workshop about using children’s literature to teach human rights in the classroom. The conversation will begin with an exploration of the history and significance of human rights education and how it can be accomplished through children’s literature. From there, we will introduce participants to our newly designed Human Rights Reading Tool (HRRT) that they can use to evaluate and include children’s books to teach about critical and sometimes difficult human rights issues. Participants will have the opportunity to preview dozens of children’s books, available for loan in classroom sets from the Connecticut State Resource Library, depicting human rights issues as they experiment with the HRRT. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of ways in which teachers can plan lessons around authentic children’s literature as well as ways in which they can facilitate thoughtful conversations about human rights in a safe and inclusive manner.



Ellen Agnello

Ellen Agnello was a 9th grade English teacher at a Connecticut high school for many years. Currently, she is a Ph.D student at the University of Connecticut where she studies reading education and teaches courses for preservice teachers. Her research interests include all things text: text complexity, reading text online, teacher text selection, and teaching human rights through text.



Joan Weir

Joan Weir is a Ph.D. student at the University of Connecticut. She is a research associate with an IES grant studying the efficacy of Strategic Interactive Writing Instruction (SIWI) of the writing outcomes of deaf/hard of hearing students. She is also a teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing in Wilton CT and is certified in special education, deaf education, and reading specialist. She has presented nationally and internationally.
