Dodd Human Rights Impact Youth Ambassadors invite you and your students to the 4th annual Connecticut Human Rights Summit on March 20, 2020. This is a one-day gathering of human rights advocates & activists to share, present and learn from one another. This year’s summit “Youth Voice For Human Rights”, will be led by students from participating Early College Experience Human Rights classes to reflect on the importance of youth voice. Participants will have an opportunity to attend fellow student research sessions, plan/think/network in creative ways in “Activist Spaces”, and engage with outspoken activist presenters on the most prevalent human rights issues impacting youth today. We hope those attending will takeaway additional knowledge about human rights topics and find new ways to translate their voice into action.

Registration will close on Monday, February 24th. Please ask students to complete the registration forms in full as it will allow us to gain accurate information on attendees.
Presentations & Proposals:
In addition to being an active participant on March 20th, we would also like to formally invite your students to present during the day. Possible presentations could include:
1) A human rights focused research project or presentation completed in class
2) Workshop led by Human Rights/Social Justice Club/Advisory Group
3) Sharing insights/work within student internship/experiential learning opportunity
Students who are interested in proposing to present at the summit should complete the following brief Student Presentation Proposal Form by Monday February 24th. We encourage all interested students and/or student groups to submit a proposal. Proposals will be reviewed equally and objectively to ensure an enriching and empowering summit experience for all.

The Dodd Center Youth Ambassadors are a dynamic, diverse team of Connecticut high school students dedicated to building partnerships, strengthening human rights education and advocating for a deeper commitment to human rights across schools and communities in Connecticut. The team works together to further the dedicated mission of both Dodd Human Rights Impact and the CT Human Rights Partnership. The Youth Ambassador coordinator is Mr. Jake Skrzypiec.

Sponsored by Dodd Human Rights Impact at the University of Connecticut, the Connecticut Human Rights and Youth Action Summit (CHRYAS) offers high school students the opportunity to
explore critical human rights issues in their communities and around the world,
engage with a diverse range of peers from across the state,
and develop the values and skills necessary to take action in support of human rights for all.
HOW IT WORKS
Each year, the CHRYAS Steering Committee designates an annual theme which provides a broad framework for summit participants (e.g. “the Right to Education”). During the fall semester, students learn core human rights content and explore the annual theme in their classrooms. Students may also choose to pursue Research Projects examining specific examples of the theme. Dodd Human Rights Impact offers research and mentoring support, and students are encouraged to collaborate with classmates as well as with students in other participating schools.
On or near International Human Rights Day (December 10), students and educators convene on the UConn Storrs campus to share and discuss their Research Projects, develop new skills and strategies for taking informed action in support of human rights, and learn from each other and from leading scholars and practitioners in the field of human rights. Student presenters are organized into panels and receive feedback from UConn students and faculty. Participants in the December Summit also engage in collaborative design work to plan Action Projects addressing the annual theme in their communities.
Following the December Summit, students continue organizing and begin implementing their Action Projects, often in collaboration with peers. In March, participants re-convene in Storrs for the March Summit, to share experiences, successes, and challenges in pursuing their Action Projects, and to learn new skills and strategies for pursuing social change in their communities.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Interested teachers should contact Steering Committee Co-Chairs Jake Skrzypiec (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Abby Esposito (email@example.com), or Dodd Human Rights Impact Director Glenn Mitoma (firstname.lastname@example.org) for additional information. Students may participate in either December or March Summits, or both. Space is limited, so schools are accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.
COST & GRANTS
There is no fee to participate in the CHRYAS. Schools, however, are expected to provide transportation to and from UConn for the summits, and to provide necessary facilities and materials for students to pursue Research and Action Projects. A limited number of grants are available from the Dodd Center to help support participation by a diverse range of schools and students.
